KNX is ideally suited to commercial applications. By using presence detection to bring lights on and off dependant on occupation of space, you could eliminate any non-required operation of lighting, heating and other building functions completely.
In addition by using constant daylight control, if it is a bright day, the lights can be automatically reduced in brightness to compensate for natural daylight, or if the day is very bright, eliminate the need for any lighting.
This will reduce energy use potentially by a very significant quantity and in today`s high energy cost market; this is a very important improvement. If it is also combined with more efficient high frequency lighting, the payback for investing in this type of system can be expected to be within a few years.
Currently, Europe`s largest construction project at Heathrow`s Terminal 5 is using KNX to control all of the lighting within the terminal and associated buildings. This system also provides the management system feedback for effective and economic ongoing maintenance.
